The Great American Yard Sale, a Naperville-area non-profit organization, was established 22 years ago to help combat homelessness in DuPage County. Since that time, thousands of local volunteers have given their time to work long hours, laboring in the heat and rain for weeks on end, to support our annual summer charity. Each year, new volunteers would come to assist our returning volunteers, and everyone would do their best to create a successful community event.
Over the years, the City of Naperville and the City of Aurora have both given outstanding support to The Great American Yard Sale, making it possible for our event to continue to help those organizations who do their utmost to prevent homelessness in DuPage County. It has been our privilege to be associated with the work of such charitable groups as Public Action to Deliver Shelter, Senior Home Sharing, Families Helping Families, Loaves and Fishes, The Food Pantry, and many other organizations that help homeless families in our area.
However, due to a lack of media attention in both 2009 and 2010, we experienced record lows in attendance, while our operational costs continued to increase. As a result, The Great American Yard Sale has losses amounting to $15,000 owed to the small businesses whose services support our two-day event. Neither these small businesses nor The Great American Yard Sale can absorb such losses.
And so it is with heavy hearts that we fold up our tents and announce the end of our two-decade commitment to

DuPage County. We would like to thank the thousands of volunteers who dedicated themselves to our project and the tens of thousands of citizens who attended our event for so many years. We are especially grateful for the untold number of household goods so faithfully and generously donated by our local residents each year.
We thank the Westfield Fox Valley Center, the City of Naperville and the City of Aurora for being such welcome hosts. And we thank all of the special people in city government who have helped us in so many ways over all these years.
And finally, we would like to thank the charities themselves. They are all doing such wonderful and important work. It has been our privilege to have played even a small part in the success of their service to our community.
We did not fail; in fact we accomplished the primary goal of the Yard Sale, helping the less fortunate. We still had families buying their winter clothing, toys for the kids, a new kitchen table, shoes and more. We still gave needed items to organizations that otherwise would not have been able to provide clothing or furnishings to the needy. Yes, we did succeed!
Thanks for all you do, for all you did and for your commitment to improving the world. When we work together, anything is possible, including ending homelessness.
